Assignment instructions: Using the song 'If' by Etienne Daho (see lyrics) and dialogues focusing on the [i] sound from 'le français par le dialogue' as models, write either a dialogue or poem that includes a minimum of 25 occurences of the [i] sound.

The goal is to reinforce the concept that multiple spelling patterns can represent the same sound, while also highlighting instances where the letter 'i' does not correspond to the [i] sound. By engaging with this task, students deepen their understanding of phonetic variability and improve their pronunciation skills in context.

Le Petit Prince: Comparative Pronunciation Assessment and Equitable Grading

Students are assigned to read the first two chapters of Le Petit Prince both at the beginning and at the end of the semester. This allows for a comparative assessment of their pronunciation and overall progress over time.

The selected samples illustrate the equitable grading approach I use. While some students may struggle with pronunciation, they can still achieve an A on this assignment based on the grading criteria. Specifically, I calculate the grade by evaluating both the frequency of repeated errors and the occurrence of new errors, then subtracting the number of errors that were corrected over the course of the semester. As long as students have successfully corrected more errors than those that remain by the end of the semester, they earn an A. This approach emphasizes individual progress and mastery of pronunciation, rewarding improvement over time.
